Garden of Desire by Will Desberg This tastefully ribald fable chronicles the life of Mickey Loverose and his quest for the perfect woman. After surviving a fatherless childhood, an eccentric mother and English boarding schools, Loverose makes his fortune by providing elegant alibis to philandering aristocrats to give in turn to their wives. But young Loverose is determined to find true love and sets off for exotic lands in an eventful but futile search. Along the way he acquires a mysterious ring that forces his conniving consorts to reveal their true intentions. In Arabia, Loverose succumbs to a sumptuous life of venery, only to discover its consequence: slow and inevitable dissipation. After escaping that pleasure prison, Loverose attempts to breed a perfect mate. He picks the parents and pays for the child's education, but once she reaches age 18, our hero discovers that his breeders (who leave town before the wedding night) have raised a child very different from what he was expecting. Witty and fanciful, this work by two Belgian comics artists combines handsome watercolor illustrations with a well-told and sexy tale. Adults Only $ 14.95

Hearts of Sand by Paringaux and de Loustal Paringaux and de Loustal ( Love Shots ) are neatly matched collaborators. The interconnections between words and pictures are so well established that it is impossible to just look at the images or read the text. De Loustal draws in the tradition of early 20th-century European artists, de Chirico and Picasso in particular. Paringaux's story recalls modernist French cinema: lots of smoking, sweating and sex, and against the clear-cut happy-ending tradition (not to mention the heterosexual tradition) many Americans are accustomed to in popular fiction. The story involves an American tennis player named Baby and three people who are attracted to her: her German chaperone, Eva, a French soldier named Robert, and an Arab who kidnaps Baby out of love. Baby spends the bulk of the story being passive while others take control of her actions. Eva and Robert appear to be stereotypes--she, the classic lesbian bitch, he, the brave male hero--but Paringaux turns the images on their ear. Eva receives no comeuppance for not being a proper woman, and Robert is an ineffectual drunkard with delusions of chivalry. A fine work from two prime French talents. $ 13.95

Ranks of the Black Order by Enki Bilal and Pierre Christin Not unlike contemporary political situations in which terrorism leads to counter-terrorism in a vicious circle this book illuminates the tragedy and monstrosity of violent vengeance on a human scale. The novel starts with the ultimately pointless struggles of left-and right-wing militants in Spain in 1938. Never having forgotten their defeat a terrorist faction returns to the village of Nieves and massacres its inhabitants as the story opens 40 years later. Enraged by the minor coverage given the slaughter journalist Jefferson Pritchard regroups his brigade and resolves to wipe out their old foes from the Black Order. As one crusty old group pursues the other across Europe the distinctions between principles- between left and right- all but vanish into a senseless haze without victors or vanquished leaving only victims. 80 pages. Softcover, Full Color, 8½ x 11, Catalan, 1989. $13.95

Roach Killer by Jacques Tardi French cartoonist Tardi returns with a peculiar protagonist in a very peculiar story. Making a call in lower Manhattan, Walter, who works as a roach exterminator, notices that unlike most buildings in New York City this one has a 13th floor. He decides to take a look around only to overhear, to his dismay, plans for a series of murders. At this point Legrand's storytelling takes a turn for the bizarre as Walter, terrified that these unidentified conspirators are after him, is joined by a lowlife coworker named Luis who may or may not be involved with Walter's pursuers. Tardi's talent for creating a brooding, blighted urban setting is exceptional and his gritty portraits of the city carry the narrative. $34.95

Tangents by Miguelanxo Prado Acclaimed Spanish comics artist Prado (Streak of Chalk) presents a stunning collection of graphic short stories surveying the poignancy and instability of a series of unconnected love affairs. These vignettes offer an unsentimental insight into the impermanence of relationships (and the routine solace of sex). One story, Ballad for Sax and Neon, presents a bad writer's dilemma in a dream sequence, providing a glimpse of lyric fantasy and an unpretentious emotional clarity. The book contains nudity and lovemaking, both generally tastefully depicted. Prado's expert color drawings, delicately varied in style and with a rich range of moody ochres, grays and browns, signal and maintain the emotional tone of the stories even better than the writing. Adults Only Hardcover $ 16.95
